Under Construction

Here are some mods and utilities being developed at the moment; they are presented as a window on current activities and in case they may be useful.

ALTHOUGH USABLE TO VARYING DEGREES, THE FOLLOWING ARE INCOMPLETE AND NOT FULLY TESTED; ACCORDINGLY, THEY ARE NOT GUARANTEED FAIL-SAFE NOR FAULT-TOLERANT AND ARE THUS SUPPLIED "AS IS", WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER!

Mengamuk

Testing some of the dialogs and forms

Mengamuk (download) (text file) is my launcher for classic FPS games such as Doom and Duke Nukem 3D; it builds on experimental variants of a GUI version of an earlier console program written in Turbo Pascal longer ago than I care to remember smile It is available under the GNU General Public Licence.

The Good Guys V2

A hapless Imp suffers the 12-Gauge wrath of the Special Forces

The Good Guys V2 (download) (text file) is a rewrite of The Good Guys for the ZDoom engine. While the original release was designed expressly for Vanilla Doom, it was always intended that a more sophisticated implementation of the concept would follow. This version is feature-complete and playable, but the hands need to be harmonised and adjusted to match the player sprites.

The Butchery

Get rid of your Gremlins – with a pump-action shotgun!

The Butchery (download) (text file) is a large map designed for the GZDoom engine and intended to have a DOOM E4 feel, with a mixture of brick, hell and tech areas as necessary. The other works presented here are mods or utilities; but of course, most doomers "have at least one map in them" smile The current build is playable but buggy in places and, due to recent advances in the engine, some of the content will likely change before an eventual release.

Currently Available

Here are some relatively recent mods and utilities comprising those in at least occasional use or for which future development might be considered.

The Bad Guys

Doom Guy vs (some of) the Bad Guys

The Bad Guys (download) (text file) is a small set of monsters, textures and decorations originally designed for The Butchery. There are Wolfenstien-3D style monsters and wall textures; DOOM style monsters and decorations; also included are those "Dead <monster>" decorations that were omitted in DOOM II. You can also visit the DOOM Archive page for The Bad Guys.

The Good Guys

Another Demon falls victim to the MP5K

The Good Guys (download) (text file) is a stand-alone special-forces patch originally designed for The Butchery; it changes most weapons, the status bar and face, plus the player sprites to give the player something of the "feel" of a special-forces commando; realistic-looking weapons are used, rather than "cartoony" style props, while DoomGuy's face now sports that must-have accessory for discerning terrorists and CT soldiers everywhere – the black balaclava smile You can also visit the DOOM Archive page for The Good Guys.

The Panels of Peril

Examples of 128x128 textures created with the panels

The Panels of Peril (download) (text file) is a set of BMP files containing textures originally designed for The Butchery; it contains 32x64 and 64x64 panels that cross-produce various DOOM texture designs across other texture backgrounds than those for which they were designed. For example, the pipework in textues TEKGREN4 and METAL4 has no COMP variant; by combining top and bottom half panels in appropriate combinations, ones might be created. This is especially useful for "industrial" and "tech base" maps. You can also visit the DOOM Archive page for The Panels of Peril.

Bombay 72

An unlucky Imp discovers that cats have claws

Bombay 72 (download) (text file) is a little whimsy that definitely falls in the "bit of fun" category smile Bombay 72 was designed for DOOM several years ago after realising that the player simulation in the game might allow one to be something other than human. Having always admired the hunting prowess of cats, one day a really strange idea entered my head — could DOOM allow you to experience the power of a big cat first-hand? Find out at the DOOM Archive page for Bombay 72 (witness also the erudite, articulate reviews smile).

RogueMH

Rogue fights a Kobold

RogueMH (download) (text file) is a port of Rogue V3.6 to WIN32 based on an old version released by the Roguelike Restoration Project way back in 2000. They have updated their site dramatically since then; but although this version of Rogue is obsolete, there is an interesting exercise in seeing see how far the old code can be knocked into shape and converted to modern standards.

Historical Interest

Here are some older works that have been superceded or were intentionally experimental in nature; they are presented in hope of them being considered useful, inspirational or maybe even educational to someone out there smile

CleanWAD

Rebuilding DOOM.WAD

CleanWAD (download) (text file) is an updated version of Serge Smirnov's WAD cleaner. This version copes with most constructs introduced by DOOM source ports and the code has been modularised and significantly cleaned up over the original. You can also view the DOOM Archive page for this version.

KDXDotNet

Selecting a WAD for a game of DOOM

KDXDotNet (download) (text file) is a port of The King Doom Experience V4.3.0 source to Visual Basic 2005. The code dates from late 2003 and has not been updated since; the project seems abandoned. The KDX is a reasonably good WAD launcher for general use, but needs some new features in order to support current DOOM source ports and practices. With the release of the Microsoft® Visual Studio® Express Editions, free of charge, there arose a good opportunity to learn GUI programming and in particular, Visual Basic and the .NET Framework. Please read the file "__status.txt" in the archive for guidance — a lot of work needs to be done to make this stable.
